Athirappilly Falls – The Largest Waterfall in Kerala
Athirappilly Falls often described as ‘India’s Niagara’, which stands tall at 80 feet, and positioned above 1000 feet’s from sea level. This magnificent Falls is on the Chalakudy river, entry to the Sholayar ranges in the Western Ghats. Athirappilly is a lovely blend of forests and the fall streams. From a height around 80 feets, this fall is considered as the largest waterfalls in Kerala. Many rare and common types of flora and fauna are found in these Athirapilly-Vazhachal forest area. This is the only place in the Western Ghats, where four vanishing hornbill species were found. This is one of the most important biodiversity hot spot in the world. Athirapally is a unique ecosystem in Kerala. The forest division of Vazhachal is the second most bio diverse area. The International Bird Association has acknowledged this place as an “Important Bird Area” and the Asian Nature Conservation Foundation has endorsed that the area should be stated as a national park or sanctuary.
In the fall, the water surges around big rocks and cascades down in three separate plumes. Below the falls, the river remains turbulent for about 1 kilometer and then it calms and flows smoothly. The unique 180 meters (590 ft) elevation riparian forest in the Athirappilly-Vazhachal area is the only location where all four South Indian species of hornbills — the great hornbill (the state bird of Kerala), Malabar pied hornbill, Malabar grey horn bill, and the Indian grey hornbill are found living together. This special location is featured in many Indian, western movies ( Baahubali, India’s biggest motion picture and Ravan are few recent works)and its become more famous when Prince Charles of Britain choose this place to Celebrate his birthday in Kerala.

The journey to the Athirappilly Falls passes through a landscape of winding roads, small villages and lush green palm plantations.
